Conservation and Land Management

Wildflowers

We have increased the habitat for pollinators and birds on our farm by installing a wildflower meadow. We have planted a Pennsylvania wildflower mix and milkweed to attract bees, birds, butterflies, and fireflies. We are hoping that the milkweed will attract Monarch Butterflies in late May, and that our meadow will provide a nursery, for the butterflies who will migrate back to Mexico in the fall.

Our farm flower is wild bergamot, also known by its botanical name Monarda fistulosa. It’s a favorite of, you guessed it Bees! Also enjoyed by butterflies and hummingbirds. Bergamot is native to Pennsylvania producing attractive and fragrant foliage all summer long. The flowers are edible and can be tossed in salads, used as garnish, and brewed into tea.

Permaculture Farming

Permaculture is a natural approach to land management and  great for small scale farms. Permaculture focuses on plant “guilds” or grouping of beneficial plant species that work together to support the larger ecosystem. We will plant guilds throughout our farm for our blueberry and other berry bushes, vegetables, nut and fruit trees, mushrooms, and our herbs and spice garden. We  sell our produce and fresh eggs on our farm stand.
